This large 6'×5' oak wine cask end, brought from Germany and hand-carved in Virginia, depicts the Weinstrasse — the German Wine Road — winding through terraced vineyards, half-timbered villages, and castle-crowned hillsides. The scene captures the timeless landscape from which the cask itself originated, completing a circle: oak grown in German soil, shaped into a barrel, filled with wine, and finally returned to art.

About the Artwork
The Deutsche Weinstrasse, or German Wine Road, stretches roughly 85 kilometers through the Palatinate region, linking wine villages, medieval castles, and terraced vineyards that have been cultivated for more than two thousand years. It is one of the oldest wine routes in the world, and the landscape it passes through — the Pfälzerwald forest rising to the west, the Rhine plain opening to the east — is inseparable from the culture of German winemaking. This cask end was carved from a barrel that made that journey in reverse: oak staved and shaped in Germany, filled with wine, and eventually brought to Virginia where the Bolinger family transformed it into a lasting record of the land it came from. The carving depicts the route as a traveler might experience it — village church spires, gabled rooftops, vine rows climbing steep slopes, and the river glinting in the valley below.
